How is the score calculated?
Offense (25%): neutral-or-better type coverage and strongest attacking base stats. Defense (30%): team resistances, unprotected and repeated weaknesses, and 4× vulnerabilities. Coverage (25%): fraction of 17 single-type targets hit super effectively by your own types. Synergy (20%): teammates resisting each other’s weaknesses, physical/special/bulk stat signals and base Speed ≥100. Scores are rounded to 0–100; the total uses the displayed subscores.
Rating bands: Excellent ≥80, Good ≥65, Fair ≥45, Poor below 45. An empty team has no rating.
Small teams are provisional and are not given a separate completion bonus. Adding a Pokémon can lower the score if it creates new weaknesses or lowers averages. These initial heuristics have not been calibrated against battle outcomes.

Plan a Generation 3 team
Choose up to six Pokémon from the first 386 species. See shared weaknesses, type coverage and suggestions that recalculate your score before you add a teammate. The builder uses Generation 3 types and base stats, including historical typings such as pure Psychic Gardevoir and pure Steel Mawile.
Which game are you playing?
| Game | Planning advice |
|---|---|
| Ruby / Sapphire / Emerald | Start with your Hoenn starter and compare teammates. This pool also includes species that require trading or other games; it is not a Hoenn encounter list. |
| FireRed / LeafGreen | Plan your Kanto team and later cross-game additions. Check version exclusives, evolution access and postgame restrictions before choosing a final roster. |
| Gen 3 battles / ADV | Compare typing and base stats across the full generation. Tier bans, moves, items, abilities and competitive legality are not validated. |
What changes from a modern team builder?
- 17 types, no Fairy. Clefable is Normal, Gardevoir is Psychic and Mawile is Steel in this generation.
- Steel resists Ghost and Dark. Both the defensive matrix and teammate recommendations use the historical chart.
- Historical base stats. Later stat buffs are excluded, so comparisons reflect the third generation.
- Physical and special attacks follow move type. Normal, Fighting, Flying, Poison, Ground, Rock, Bug, Ghost and Steel are physical; Fire, Water, Grass, Electric, Psychic, Ice, Dragon and Dark are special. This tool compares typing and base-stat signals; it does not evaluate movesets or damage.
How to choose your next teammate

Frequently asked questions
Does Gen 3 mean only Pokémon introduced in Hoenn?
No. Generation 3 includes the earlier Kanto and Johto species as well, for a total of 386. The picker’s generation filter refers to when a species debuted, not whether it can be caught in a particular game.
Can I use this as an Emerald team builder?
Yes, for typing and base-stat planning. Check how each teammate is obtained separately: this National Dex pool does not enforce Emerald encounters, trading, events or story progress.
Does the score predict whether my team will win?
No. It is a transparent planning heuristic based on types and base stats. Abilities such as Levitate, moves, items, levels and battle decisions can change the actual matchup.
