How to play

Use Flamethrower for consistent Fire damage or choose coverage against a suitable target. Flame Body may burn a contact attacker, but activation is not guaranteed.

Watch out for

Key risk. Boots protect from entry hazards, not direct damage. Focus Blast can miss and this set has no recovery move. Water, Ground and Rock attacks are super effective; Thunderbolt does not make switching into Water attacks safe.

About this example

This editorial starting point is not a ranked-format recommendation or a legality check. It does not specify EVs or Tera type. Moves, items and abilities here do not change the builder score.

BATTLE PLAN

When to attack, set up or switch

Use Flamethrower for consistent Fire damage or choose coverage against a suitable target. Flame Body may burn a contact attacker, but activation is not guaranteed.

A Water type comes in on the Fire STAB

Water deals 2× to Magmortar and Thunderbolt deals 2× back, so the exchange favors neither side unless Magmortar moves first. It has no Speed to promise that and no recovery move on the set.

Focus Blast is the move you need

Focus Blast can miss, and against a Dark or Normal target it is the only option that scores — Fighting hits both for 2× where Fire is shrugged off or ignored. Scorching Sands is the Ground answer to Fire and Rock switches instead.

Entry hazards are running

Heavy-Duty Boots remove the hazard tax, not the direct damage. Ground, Rock and Water are the three types that hit Magmortar for 2×, and none of them care what item it holds.

What does a safe pivot mean?

A teammate uses a switching move to bring Magmortar in. A slower pivot may take the opponent’s hit first. Turn order and the opponent’s move still matter.

ITEM & ABILITY

How this build works

Flame Body can burn a contacting attacker, but activation is a chance rather than a result, so switching into a physical hit is a wager and not a wall. Thunderbolt is the reason Magmortar can answer a Water switch-in at all, and it does not make the switch safe for Magmortar.

Watch the tradeoff. Boots protect from entry hazards, not direct damage. Focus Blast can miss and this set has no recovery move. Water, Ground and Rock attacks are super effective; Thunderbolt does not make switching into Water attacks safe.

These battle mechanics do not change the builder’s type-and-base-stat score. The tool does not simulate moves, abilities, held items or damage.

COMPARE YOUR OPTIONS

Teammate ideas

A Flying teammate covers Ground attacks. A Water or Ground partner helps with Rock attackers; add Speed elsewhere.

These are typing-based starting pairs, not a complete competitive team. Check the remaining four slots and your game’s rules.

    Key insights
    • Ground attacks threaten 1 of 1 teammates, with no teammate resisting them by type.
    • Rock attacks threaten 1 of 1 teammates, with no teammate resisting them by type.
    • Your own types can hit 4 of 18 single-type targets super effectively. Actual move coverage can differ.
    • No teammate has a base Speed of 100 or higher. Consider adding a faster option.

    How is the score calculated?

Offense (25%): neutral-or-better type coverage and strongest attacking base stats. Defense (30%): team resistances, unprotected and repeated weaknesses, and 4× vulnerabilities. Coverage (25%): fraction of 18 single-type targets hit super effectively by your own types. Synergy (20%): teammates resisting each other’s weaknesses, physical/special/bulk stat signals and base Speed ≥100. Scores are rounded to 0–100; the total uses the displayed subscores.

Rating bands: Excellent ≥80, Good ≥65, Fair ≥45, Poor below 45. An empty team has no rating.

Small teams are provisional and are not given a separate completion bonus. Adding a Pokémon can lower the score if it creates new weaknesses or lowers averages. These initial heuristics have not been calibrated against battle outcomes.
