How to play

Contrary reverses Leaf Storm’s usual Special Attack drop into a boost when the move hits. Glare can slow an eligible target; Substitute costs HP to create a decoy.

Watch out for

Key risk. Leaf Storm can miss and has limited PP. Grass attacks are resisted by several types; Dragon Pulse cannot hit Fairy types. Substitute does not block all attacks or effects.

About this example

This editorial starting point is not a ranked-format recommendation or a legality check. It does not specify EVs or Tera type. Moves, items and abilities here do not change the builder score.

BATTLE PLAN

When to attack, set up or switch

Contrary reverses Leaf Storm’s usual Special Attack drop into a boost when the move hits. Glare can slow an eligible target; Substitute costs HP to create a decoy.

Leaf Storm misses

A miss means no boost and no damage, and Leaf Storm is the move you cannot spam: it has the least PP on the set. If the matchup needs more turns than its PP allows, plan a different answer instead of praying over the last few uses.

A Fairy type switches in

Dragon Pulse cannot hit a Fairy type at all, while Leaf Storm still lands for normal damage. Fairy does not resist Grass, so the Grass move stays usable even though it will not build another boost.

What does a safe pivot mean?

A teammate uses a switching move to bring Serperior in. A slower pivot may take the opponent’s hit first. Turn order and the opponent’s move still matter.

ITEM & ABILITY

How this build works

Contrary turns Leaf Storm’s Special Attack drop into a raise when the move is used, so the boost comes from attacking rather than from a setup turn. Glare and Substitute still need a target that can be paralyzed or a turn you can afford to lose HP for.

Watch the tradeoff. Leaf Storm can miss and has limited PP. Grass attacks are resisted by several types; Dragon Pulse cannot hit Fairy types. Substitute does not block all attacks or effects.

These battle mechanics do not change the builder’s type-and-base-stat score. The tool does not simulate moves, abilities, held items or damage.

COMPARE YOUR OPTIONS

Serperior or Sceptile?

Sceptile offers a different fast Grass attacker, without Contrary’s Leaf Storm boosts.

Teammate ideas

A Fire teammate pressures Steel types. A Steel partner can resist several Grass weaknesses and add physical damage.

These are typing-based starting pairs, not a complete competitive team. Check the remaining four slots and your game’s rules.

    How is the score calculated?

Offense (25%): neutral-or-better type coverage and strongest attacking base stats. Defense (30%): team resistances, unprotected and repeated weaknesses, and 4× vulnerabilities. Coverage (25%): fraction of 18 single-type targets hit super effectively by your own types. Synergy (20%): teammates resisting each other’s weaknesses, physical/special/bulk stat signals and base Speed ≥100. Scores are rounded to 0–100; the total uses the displayed subscores.

Rating bands: Excellent ≥80, Good ≥65, Fair ≥45, Poor below 45. An empty team has no rating.

Small teams are provisional and are not given a separate completion bonus. Adding a Pokémon can lower the score if it creates new weaknesses or lowers averages. These initial heuristics have not been calibrated against battle outcomes.
